Estimation of surface wind speed by ocean ambient noise

  • The ocean ambient noise is highly correlated with surface wind speed. The relation between the ambient noise and the wind speed has been derived based on the measurements made in recent years. We have proposed a new multi-section method to linearly fit the relation between ambient noise and the logarithm of wind speed respectively in different wind speed sections, and determined the best frequency band to perform the inversion operations. The multi- section fitting parameters are determined from the measured data at Maidao Sea, and satisfying results are obtained for estimating the the surface wind speed by ocean ambient noise, and all estimating errors are within 10% of the wind speed between 0.1 and 22.6 m/s.
