A comparative study of F0 patterens between Chinese and foreign languages

  • The fundamental frequency F0 patterns of Chinese, English, German and Japanese were investigated at both macro-level and micro-level by using a Laryngograph, which can detect F0 precisely. The speakers included 14 Chinese, 3 American, 2 Canadian, 1 Austrilian, 3 German, and 5 Japanese. It is shown that:1. There is no significant difference in ninety Percent pitch range between Chinese and other languages;2. The itter factors, both positive and negative, in connected speech of different languages studied for male and female speakers are nearly the same; 3. There is a tendency towards that the negative jitter factor appears to be lager than positive jitter factor in connected speech; 4. The speech rate in syllables Per second of Chinese speakers is somewhat lower than that of foreigners.
