Cross-cultural study on neighborhood noise problem results of students

  • The cross-cultural study on noise problems has been taken by Chinese. The questionnaire for the survey on noise problems was translated from Japanese and the subjects are 402 students studying in universities. The results are summarized as follows:
    1. The image profiles of Noise. Noiseness and Annoyance in Chiness have a similar tendency and images of these words are worse. The word "Loudness" has a neutral image. These results are similar with that of Japanese.
    2. Chinese attitudes to both noise and effect of noise from neighborhoods are severe. Especially, the attitude towards "taking care not to annoy neighbors by selfmade noise" is very critical. These results are also similar with Japanese.
    3. Chinese prefer to solve the problem of noise from neighborhoods by operation of the law, but Japanese, British and German dosn't like that way.
    4. The results of surveys reflect the differences of social and cultural backgrounds of various countries. The Chinese result is more similar with Japanese than British or German.
